Become a Club Member

We endeavor to assure and enhance the quality of life for boys and girls as participating members of a richly diverse society. With special concern for the disadvantaged, our organization assists children to realize their potential for growth and development.

Our organization is fully aware of the influences of today’s urban environment. As a result we work to provide our youth with relevant programs and services which demonstrate that we care for them and for their development. In striving towards our mission we seek to provide services based on the principles which will achieve the health, social, educational, vocational, character and leadership development of our membership. The organization provides delinquency prevention and youth development programs and services for boys and girls, ages seven through eighteen. Over the years the Roy W. Roberts, II -Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club has been a stable, positive force in the lives of thousands of young people - a beacon of hope, encouragement and possibilities.

Club History

In 1957 the Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club (WWBGC) was founded as a gift to the community from the Los Angeles Times Charities, Inc. Originally incorporated as Southern Area Boys Club, this organization was the first club to serve the south Los Angeles area. It is now named in memory of its long-time executive director of twenty-seven years, Roy W. Roberts, II who passed away in 2002.

CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP

Keystone

Keystone is the Boys & Girls Club Movement’s ultimate teen program. This unique leadership development experience provides opportunities for teens ages 14 to 18. Teens participate in activities in three focus areas: academic success, career preparation and community service. With the guidance of an adult advisor, Keystone Clubs aim to have a positive impact on members, the Club and community.

Passport to Manhood

Passport to Manhood sessions concentrate on a specific aspect of character and manhood through interactive activities. Each member receives his own “passport” to underscore the notion that he is on a personal journey of maturation and growth. The program includes a service project where boys learn the importance of giving back to the community.

SMART Girls

Through group discussions, activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with positive adult women, our SMART Girls participate and explore their own social attitudes and values. The girls focus on healthy eating habits, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.

Youth of the Year

Youth of the Year is our premier teen recognition program. Throughout the year teens ages 14-18 participate in various activities that make them stand out. At the end of the year they have the opportunity to be nominated as the Youth of the Year. As they progress through the Youth of the Year competitions, they have the chance to eventually become the National Youth of the Year.

A PLACE TO BECOME SUCCESFUL

Sarai Sosa is a seventeen-year-old Club member who has been attending the Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club for the last seven years. Currently, she is completing her last semester of high school at King Drew Magnet High School. Although life has not been easy on her, Sarai does not give up. With unquestionable perseverance, she makes it her priority to complete all her responsibilities as a Club member and student.

At the Club, Sarai participates in community outreach, provides one-on-one mentoring for younger Club members, and strives to improve everyone around her. After winning her peers' nomination and approval of becoming the teen leadership program's President, she has set the standards to be an effective and inspirational leader. Although the position may be stressful, she takes pride in herself to be a positive role model for her peers and the younger Club members.

Most recently, Sarai was selected to represent Boys & Girls Club of Metro Los Angeles as the 2016 Youth of Year.

Her hobbies include watching and reading anime, completing STEM-based research projects, drawing, and painting. After the completion of high school, she desires to attend college at UC Merced or enroll into the U.S. Navy. Sarai will attain her goals and become a successful Club alumnus in whatever she carries out.
