BGCMLA's Vivian Advances to CA Youth of the Year

MARCH 16, 2026 - LOS ANGELES, CA - As Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) celebrates 10 Years United, we honor a decade of empowering young people across Metro LA, South LA, Inglewood, Venice, and Southeast LA. At the heart of this work is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year program, a national initiative that recognizes outstanding teens for their leadership, service, academic achievement, and commitment to making a difference.

This year, we are proud to spotlight Vivian, our 2026 BGCMLA Youth of the Year and co-winner of Los Angeles County Youth of the Year . After months of preparation and sharing her story alongside seventeen inspiring teens from across the county, Vivian was selected as the LA County co-winner with Fernanda and will now advance to the California Youth of the Year competition in Sacramento.

Vivian’s journey highlights the power of connection and a deep commitment to using her voice to uplift her community!

Growing up in an immigrant household, Vivian learned early on how policy and uncertainty could shape a family’s sense of safety. Witnessing her parents navigate fear motivated her to turn that awareness into action, to protect her family and her community whenever she could.

“The law has never felt distant to me because it has always directly affected my family’s life.”

Her commitment came alive through advocacy, where she has participated in walkouts to uplift immigrant communities and now works to educate others about their rights, connect at-risk families to legal resources, and support those afraid to leave their homes through grocery deliveries and errands.

However, for years, Vivian struggled with confidence shaped by how others perceived her appearance.

“Being visibly different made me feel exposed, as if my body spoke before I ever had the chance to."

Fortunately, in an environment where she felt safe, supported, and encouraged, Vivian's bold ideas and leadership were recognized and celebrated, not just her appearance. BGCMLA mentors encouraged her to speak up and take on new challenges, helping her rebuild confidence at her own pace. Over time, she learned that her voice deserved to be heard and that resilience is built by showing up, even when doubt lingers. The Club became a place where she could take up space authentically, trust her strengths, and grow into the leader she is today.

She has finally found the guidance and belonging she had been missing. “Leadership has never been a title to me; it has always been something I had to grow into,” she says. As the current president of Keystone, her primary focus is on inclusion: organizing meetings, leading service projects, and empowering peers to step into roles that match their strengths.

As Vivian advances to the Youth of the Year state level and beyond, we celebrate her growth in confidence and leadership! BGCMLA is proud to support her with a scholarship and a trip to Sacramento , giving her a platform to continue advocating for her family, neighbors, and communities, and to inspire the next generation of changemakers statewide.

As you consider your year-end charitable giving, here's why donating before December 31, 2025 can be especially impactful—both for the youth we serve and for donors seeking to maximize the financial benefits of giving.

1. Charitable Deduction Limits

Cash gifts to qualified public charities, such as BGCMLA, are generally deductible up to 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) . If your donation exceeds this limit, the IRS typically allows you to carry forward the excess deduction for up to five years .

This makes year-end giving a powerful opportunity to support causes you care about while planning strategically.

2. Timing Matters: Upcoming Tax Changes

Current tax rules are more favorable than those expected to take effect in 2026. Under upcoming changes:

LOS ANGELES, CA - NOVEMEBER 6, 2025 - At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles 2025 DreamBuilders Gala held on October 17, we proudly introduced the first representatives of our BGCMLA Alumni Network —former Club members whose lives have been transformed by the Club. Today, these alumni are making an impact across a wide range of fields, inspiring the next generation of leaders, innovators, and creatives to dream big and unapologetically take up space.

Here is a snippet of their stories:

Genesis Cruz

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles Alumn, LA County Youth of the Year

"Because of you, young people like me have the chance to dream bigger, aim higher, and know that we’re not alone."

Growing up in Watts, Genesis Cruz faced significant challenges. She moved between homes and schools, never feeling fully settled, and longed for stability and guidance. But when she walked into a BGCMLA Club, everything changed. She was welcomed, seen, and supported in ways she hadn’t even realized she needed.

Rising Above Adversity

At just five years old, Genesis was placed in the custody of a father she barely knew before returning to her mother, a single parent doing her best to provide. Amid constant transitions, she often searched for safety, stability, and opportunity.

Joining the Boys & Girls Club gave her the mentorship, confidence, and sense of belonging she needed during a pivotal time in her adolescence.

A Future Built Through Support

Today, Genesis is a junior at the University of Southern California , double-majoring in Law and Public Relations. Her experiences include:

Interning at the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS) in San Francisco, advancing policy and advocacy work
Spending a summer at Nike Headquarters as a Marketing & Communications Intern
Preparing to study abroad in Rome next spring, with guidance and resources she accessed through the Club

Genesis credits much of her growth to BGCMLA staff, including a dedicated mentor, Mariana Cervantes , who continues to shape her journey. She reflects on how the Club welcomed her when many teens feel overlooked, and how that support gave her the confidence to pursue opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

Before closing her speech at the 2025 DreamBuilders Gala , Genesis thanked everyone who supports BGCMLA:

"You’re not just investing in programs — you’re investing in our futures, our confidence, and our belief that we can change the world .”

Genesis’s story reminds us why Boys & Girls Clubs exist: to provide youth with the mentorship, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive — and to ensure no child ever has to navigate life alone.

Denzell O. Jordan-Perry

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles Alumn, Pacific Region Youth of the Year

“I am not an exception — I am evidence of what happens when someone believes, when someone invests, when someone builds dreams.”

Denzell O. Jordan-Perry 's journey from a Club kid in Watts/Willowbrook to a Fortune 500 HR Executive and elected Board of Education member in Compton is a testament to the transformative power of youth development programs.

Growing up in a single-parent household, Denzell faced daily challenges. His mother worked two jobs to provide for the family, and he navigated life with two learning disabilities. School was a constant struggle, and by sixth grade, he was told every day by a teacher that he was “stupid” and would never succeed.

Finding Safety and Support at the Club

"When the world labeled me as ‘less than,’ the Club staff looked at me and saw more ."

Amid these challenges, the Watts/Willowbrook Club became a second home, where staff saw potential where others saw limitations. They provided guidance, opportunities, and a safe environment for youth to discover their authentic selves. One day, gang members threatened him and his brother, and Club staff risked their own safety to shield them, a genuine example of protection and love from their community.

It truly takes a village (or a Club) to raise a child, and more importantly, teach them how to change the odds . Today, he is a leader, a professional, and a changemaker, proving what’s possible when our community invests in youth.

These stories are made possible thanks to the dedication of our communities, staff, government, local partners, and donors, who keep high-quality, meaningful afterschool programs thriving and designed to meet the unique needs of every youth.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2025 - LOS ANGELES - The first day of school is meant to be filled with excitement—new beginnings, fresh notebooks, and the promise of possibility! But for many families, the rising cost of supplies can turn that excitement into stress, worry, and for some, shame.

This year, thanks to the incredible generosity of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles partners and donors, more than 600 families across Metro Los Angeles received brand-new backpacks filled with everything from notebooks and pens to highlighters and more. This site-wide effort gave families a much-needed break as they prepared for the year ahead, helping them save money while ensuring kids had the tools they need to thrive in the classroom.

A special thank you goes to KCAL Cares , who kicked off the season with a major donation drive at our Challengers Club, led by Sports Anchor and our upcoming DreamBuilders Gala emcee, Darren M. Haynes .

For the past seven years, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Chargers Impact Fund have helped bring that vision to life through literacy, mental wellness, and culturally relevant programs that meet youth where they are.

Less than a year after announcing a $400,000 capital investment in 2018, the Chargers and the Spanos family unveiled a revitalized athletic field and teen center at our Watts/Willowbrook Club. In partnership with Bob's Discount Furniture , they reimagined key Club facilities into vibrant, youth-centered environments built for connection and belonging.

Today, these spaces remain active, welcoming hubs, whether kids are racing through obstacle courses on the field or teens are unwinding, studying, and fostering community in a space they can truly call their own.

Their continued investment is part of a multi-year partnership, and we are so grateful for their support in expanding access to educational enrichment and wellness programs that unveil the full potential of the youth we serve.

Rhymes with Reason: Where Lyrics Shape Vocabulary

Especially at the Watts/Willowbrook Club, music is how young people understand the world, share their feelings, and tell their stories. When we partnered with the Chargers to launch Rhymes with Reason — a literacy program that uses hip-hop to teach vocabulary and reading comprehension — something clicked.

Throughout this curriculum, youth break down the lyrics of the artists they love, building authentic connections to language while discovering new ways to understand themselves and their place in the world. For many, it’s the first time their interests have been reflected in what they’re learning.

Thanks to this collaboration, we’ve engaged hundreds of Club teens through Rhymes with Reason, advancing literacy while affirming their voice, identity, and creativity.

Rhymes with Reason: Where Lyrics Shape Vocabulary

Our Director of Wellness and Support Services, Jocelyne Cortes, puts it best:

“Research shows that when youth have access to safe spaces and trusted adults, they’re more likely to build resilience, improve emotional well-being, and thrive. A single moment of support can transform struggle into strength and change the trajectory of a young person’s life .”

Mental well-being starts with caring spaces where young people can pause, reflect, and be reminded that they matter. In California alone, over 284,000 youth experience major depression, yet two out of three receive no treatment at all ( Governor Newsom’s Master Plan for Kids' Mental Health , 2022). In our communities, we see the toll of this crisis on students’ ability to focus, believe in themselves, and succeed both in and out of the classroom every day.

So, we start with what matters most: creating a foundation of safety where healing can begin.

What started with a single Calm Corner in 2023 has evolved into a network of fully funded spaces in every BGCMLA Club, including Challengers/South LA, Venice, Bell Gardens, and Watts/Willowbrook. Each Calm Corner is purposefully designed to help Club members self-regulate, reflect, and develop coping skills. These spaces include sensory toys, noise-reducing headphones, calming visuals, art supplies, books, and technology that reinforces social-emotional learning.

This vital expansion has helped ensure that every young person who walks through our doors has access to tools that help their emotional well-being. As shared by one of our young Club Members:

"[The Calm Corner room] makes you laugh and helps you and your friends calm down. At first you might be nervous, angry, or sad, but everything in it cheers you up!"

Bolts Book Club: Stories That Reflect and Inspire

Through the Bolts Book Club , Club kids receive handpicked books that reflect their identities, spark curiosity, and foster a lifelong love of reading. Each story offers more chances for youth to expand their imagination and explore the world through words.

The best part is that reading becomes a shared experience. Group discussions and themed activities help bring each story to life, encouraging deeper thinking, creativity, and connection. Some of the most meaningful moments happen when Chargers players, including safety Derwin James , visit to read alongside youth and remind them that reading is a source of pride and power at every stage of life.

This year, our College Bound program at Los Angeles Unified School District 's Jordan High School has proven just how powerful that support can be, maintaining a 100% graduation rate for all students enrolled in the program.

Throughout the 2024–2025 school year, 64 College Bound students at Jordan High School engaged in a dynamic blend of hands-on experiences and targeted workshops, all designed to prepare them for life after high school and sharpen their focus on the future.

Th e program hosted 15 workshops covering essential topics such as:

College application reviews
Resume building and interview preparation
Professional identity development through LinkedIn
Community college exploration
Financial aid and financial literacy sessions in partnership with California State University-Dominguez Hills

One of the year’s standout partnerships was with Foley & Lardner LLP , who helped deliver a 6-week Street Law program. Students explored real-world legal concepts, including contract negotiations, employment law, and intellectual property, while also learning about career pathways in the legal field.

Beyond the classroom, students had opportunities to explore college life and career possibilities in real-world settings:

In February, students toured UC Irvine, gaining insight into campus life and the surrounding University Town Center.
In May, students attended college accelerator workshops focus on college readiness hosted by the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation at Dodger Stadium, with guidance from the USC College Advising Corps .

Whether inside a workshop or out in the field, every experience this year was designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue their goals.

LIVE, made possible through our fantastic partnership with Coca-Cola! This initiative was a game-changer for our Club youth, offering a deep dive into the dynamic world of the music industry and sparking countless new possibilities.

For ten weeks, our young members weren't just listening to music – they were creating it, analyzing it, and understanding the multifaceted careers that make it all happen. This immersive program was carefully crafted to nurture essential skills, encouraging critical thinking, fostering boundless creativity, and developing practical abilities in crucial areas like:

Music Production: Learning the technical magic behind recording and mixing tracks.
Songwriting: Discovering the art of crafting lyrics and melodies that resonate.
Performance: Gaining confidence and stage presence to share their musical talents.
Industry Management: Understanding the business side of music, from marketing to artist representation.

The highlight of this enriching experience was undoubtedly the creation of an original song, “Everything Ghana Be OK,” composed and performed entirely by the talented young individuals from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. Slam Dunk for Venice: Lakers Gym Renovation

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation , the Club's gymnasium has undergone a stunning renovation, culminating in a joyous ribbon-cutting ceremony.

This isn't just about a fresh coat of paint and some new hoops. It's about providing a safe and inspiring space where young people can learn, grow, and play. The Lakers Youth Foundation's commitment to giving back to the Los Angeles community is truly making a difference.

What Went Down:

A Refreshed Space: The foundation completely refurbished the gymnasium, transforming it into a vibrant and welcoming environment for healthy exercise and sports.
A Celebration of Community: A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening of the renovated gym, bringing together the foundation, club members, and the community to celebrate this exciting milestone.

Leylah Fernandez Joins USTA SoCal for Youth Tennis Clinic

February 26, 2025 (Los Angeles, CA) - Tennis star Leylah Fernandez, in collaboration with the Leylah Annie & Family Foundation , and USTA Southern California (USTA SoCal) recently hosted a memorable youth tennis clinic at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) - Challengers Club in South Los Angeles. The event brought together 40 local youth ages 8-16 for a day of hands-on tennis training, mentorship, and inspiration.

This clinic, designed to give young athletes a chance to connect with one of the sport’s rising stars, featured a special warm-up session with Leylah Fernandez. The clinic was held on four newly renovated tennis courts, thanks to a grant from the USTA Foundation, which helps to support BGCMLA and more than 250 similar organizations nationwide that use tennis as a vehicle to prepare young people for life both on and off the court. Leylah, alongside a team of expert coaches, worked directly with the kids to teach essential tennis skills and techniques.

"I had an amazing time today working with these kids," said Leylah Fernandez. "Tennis has taught me so much about perseverance, teamwork, and discipline, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share that with these young athletes. I hope they leave here feeling inspired to chase their dreams, on and off the court."

The clinic included a comprehensive coaching session, with all the kids receiving personalized attention across the four courts. Each participant was gifted with a new tennis racquet and other special surprises, ensuring they left with the tools and encouragement to continue their tennis journey.

"We’re thrilled to have been part of such an inspiring event," said Esther Hendershott, Director of Community and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion of USTA Southern California. "Events like this help grow the game of tennis and show kids the power of sport, and we are proud to partner with the Leylah Annie & Family Foundation and Boys & Girls Club to make a difference in these young athletes’ lives."

LOS ANGELES - FEBRUARY 7, 2025 - At the Watts/Willowbrook Club, we celebrated five exceptional Club members! Hear their inspiring stories of overcoming challenges and finding their place at with us at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA). This year we are proud to announce Kaydence as our 2025 BGCMLA Youth of the Year ! All participants receive a stipend for their hard work and commitment to this premier teen recognition program. A special congratulations to this year's remarkable speakers:

Kaydence - Our 2025 BGCMLA Youth of the Year!

Kaydence is a creative and resilient individual who has navigated personal challenges and found growth through her experiences. Her passions include art, drawing since the age of two, and video games, which have been a significant part of her life since childhood. She values expressing creativity in any form and comes from a family of artists, with her mother focusing on drawing and painting, and her father composing music and working as a tattoo artist. Kaydence uses drawing as a way to cope with hardships and express her emotions and desires.

Her journey has also been marked by personal growth and overcoming challenges. Kaydence was diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarten and later with Oppositional Defiant Disorder in fourth grade, which led to difficulties in school and social interactions. She experienced alienation and struggled with her behavior, which affected her relationships with teachers and friends. However, a turning point came when she was confronted by her friends about her behavior, prompting her to reflect and make changes. Kaydence has also faced mental health challenges, including depressive episodes and suicidal thoughts, but has worked towards healing and self-acceptance.

In middle school, Kaydence joined the Boys and Girls Club, where she found a welcoming environment and engaged in various activities. She also had the opportunity to participate in a sailing program through the club, which led to significant personal growth and new experiences. Through her journey, Kaydence has learned to manage her ADHD and ODD, forgive herself, and embrace all aspects of her identity.

Osbaldo - Runner Up & 2024 BGCMLA Youth of the Year

Osbaldo's life has been deeply influenced by his passion for music and his involvement with the Watts/Willowbrook Club. His love for music began in childhood and intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading him to learn guitar. The Club provided him with access to the Fender Play Program, where his passion for music grew under the mentorship of Ms. Anita. Beyond music, the Club offered opportunities for leadership and personal growth. Osbaldo's experiences include working over the summer, starting a podcast advocating for social justice, and participating in the Summit for America's Youth in Washington, D.C., which broadened his perspective and solidified his commitment to the Club.

Osbaldo has transformed from someone who preferred to observe from the sidelines into a proactive individual who pursues his dreams. Growing up in an environment marked by challenges like high crime and homelessness, the Club has empowered him to dream beyond his circumstances. He actively engages in various programs, such as music production, recording, and the Street Law Program, exploring his interests and developing his skills. Osbaldo is dedicated to giving back to his community, mentoring younger children at the Club and supporting their development. His commitment to music and social justice is driven by a desire to uplift his community and address the disparities he sees. Osbaldo aims to be a voice for the unheard, advocating for change and inspiring hope in his community. He values personal growth and embraces change as a means of self-improvement and making a difference in the world.

Tyler - Runner Up

Tyler's life has been significantly shaped by his involvement with BGCMLA, where he transitioned from a shy, unfocused student to a confident, goal-oriented young person. Initially drawn to the club, he discovered his potential through various activities, including playing guitar in a band, which fostered self-expression and public speaking confidence. He actively participated in Club events, honing his listening and leadership skills, and built strong, supportive relationships. His commitment extended to community engagement through sports coaching and participation in agricultural service projects. A pivotal moment in 7th grade, a candid conversation with a teacher about failing grades, triggered a profound shift. This realization highlighted the importance of education and personal responsibility, prompting him to adopt a focused, hardworking approach. He learned that dedication and a "win-win" mindset are crucial for achieving goals.

Driven by a desire to be a role model, Tyler harbors ambitions in content creation, professional basketball, and barbering. He aims to leverage his experiences to uplift his community, emphasizing the importance of personal and communal development. Raymundo - Runner Up

Raymundo is a resilient and ambitious individual who has transformed his high school experience through academic dedication, leadership, and community involvement. Initially reserved, Raymundo's life took a positive turn when he joined the Boys & Girls Club, which motivated him to excel and seek opportunities for growth. He actively participates in programs and embodies qualities like ambition, curiosity, maturity, excellence, and joy. His ambition drives him to maximize learning opportunities and prepare for success as a first-generation scholar, and his curiosity fuels his pursuit of knowledge in public health and medicine, aiming to make a meaningful impact on people's lives.

Raymundo has demonstrated maturity by supporting his family, particularly his mother with congestive heart failure, and balancing various responsibilities. He strives for excellence in academics and leadership, inspiring others through his involvement in varsity volleyball and community service. His joyful attitude and ability to find positivity, even in challenging situations, define his character. His experiences, including completing a youth law program and becoming a Posse semi-finalist, have prepared him for his journey as a first-generation college student. Raymundo is motivated by his love for family, passion for healthcare, and goal of improving healthcare outcomes in his community. He has gained hands-on experience in healthcare through USC's allied health programs and founded a medical club at his high school to educate and inspire his peers.

Abram - Runner Up

Abram experienced a profound loss with the passing of his younger brother on October 12, 2022, an event that deeply impacted his life. In the immediate aftermath, he struggled with intense sadness, missed school, and engaged in aimless wandering, grappling with his emotions and the overwhelming grief. A few weeks later, he found a supportive environment at the Boys and Girls Club, where he formed strong connections and participated in activities.

At the Club, Abram's involvement as a Youth Intern transformed him, enhancing his communication skills and providing him with valuable work experience. He is a young Latino man who values safety, education, and community. Seeing children at the club reminds him of his brother and motivates him to create safe spaces for kids. He is passionate about working with children and deeply misses his deceased brother. Abram is focused on making his community safer and ensuring that everyone is treated with care and respect. He is developing strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills, and has aspirations for higher education and a career in law enforcement, with a dream of becoming an FBI agent.

During Youth of the Year, judges representing the community and diverse backgrounds will select one teen to represent BGCMLA at the city, state, regional, and national levels. These judges are committed to fostering leadership and nurturing the next generation of community leaders, and we're so grateful to have their support!

USC Trojans Inspire Young Minds

September 24, 2024 (Los Angeles, CA) - In a heartwarming display of community engagement, USC Football players recently hosted a special tour of their state-of-the-art facilities for young members of the Challengers Club from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. The event, organized through the NIL initiative House of Victory , provided a unique opportunity for these aspiring athletes to experience the world of collegiate sports firsthand.

"Seeing the practice field and fully equipped fitness gym was eye-opening," said Karen Quiroz, Director of Athletics and Health at the Challengers Clubhouse. "These resources are not available at every school, and it's inspiring for our kids to see what's possible."

The Challengers Clubhouse, a part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro LA, has been serving underprivileged youth in the community since 1968. By providing access to educational programs, sports activities, and mentorship opportunities, the club aims to empower young people to reach their full potential.

"For kids who haven't seen what college can be like, it's good for them to get this experience at one of the best universities," said Eric Gentry, a senior linebacker and House of Victory student-athlete. "It's about more than just football; it's about inspiring the next generation."

The USC football players were more than happy to share their experiences and answer questions from the young visitors. From discussing their training routines to offering advice on balancing academics and athletics, the players served as positive role models.

"This tour was a dream come true for our kids," said Quiroz. "Interacting with the USC football players was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will inspire them to strive for greatness."

JULY 1, 2024 (LOS ANGELES) - On June 25th, the SiriusXM LA studio transformed into a hub of music education and inspiration for local teens from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA). The event, aptly named "Rhythm In Action," was sponsored by Cricket Wireless and offered a unique opportunity for young music enthusiasts to dive into the world of audio entertainment.

The day kicked off with a behind-the-scenes tour of the SiriusXM studios, giving students a peek into the magic of radio broadcasting. This was followed by a series of engaging activities designed to spark their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Interactive workshops and roundtable panels brought together industry leaders from across SiriusXM's departments, who discussed the ever-evolving music industry and its exciting future.

But the learning didn't stop there! Students even got the chance to flex their marketing muscles. After an exclusive performance by talented artist Kalan.FrFr, the students were presented with a challenge: develop a marketing strategy for the artist's next single! Game On with LA Sparks & Girls Got Game

Exploring Equity: Pilot Smithsonian Program at Watts/Willowbrook Club

May 29, 2024 (Los Angeles, CA) - We're excited to announce the launch of a brand new program here at Watts/Willowbrook Club: Exploring Equity! This initiative is a collaboration between the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and the Smithsonian Institution, and it's designed to empower our teens through social-emotional development, civic engagement, and a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Exploring Equity builds upon the incredible BGCA Youth for Unity program, which equips young people with the skills and knowledge to be responsible citizens. This new addition adds a specific lens of equity to the program, tackling social issues, civic engagement, and environmental awareness in a way that's relevant to our teens' lives.

The program is a result of collaboration between Smithsonian educators and our very own youth development professionals here at Watts/Willowbrook Club. This means the curriculum is informed by the real-world experiences and interests of our teens.

After this pilot program wraps up, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Smithsonian will gather feedback from us and other participating Clubs. They'll then refine the program and resources, making them available to over 5,000 Boys & Girls Clubs across the nation! Courtside with Stan Smith Ahead of Documentary Premiere

May 3, 2024 (Los Angeles) - The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) welcomed USTA Foundation Incorporated (USTA Foundation) alongside tennis and cultural icon Stan Smith. This surprise visit was in anticipation of the Los Angeles premiere of UNINTERRUPTED’s documentary "Who Is Stan Smith?". The documentary not only to delves into the life of the legendary Stan Smith but also to contribute to a noble cause, with a portion of its proceeds set to benefit the USTA Foundation’s flagship National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) network.

The NJTL network, established in 1969 by tennis legends Arthur Ashe and Charlie Pasarell, along with Sheridan Snyder, encompasses over 250 chapters nationwide, including BGCMLA. This network provides more than 150,000 under-resourced youth with access to free or low-cost tennis and academic programming. During the visit, the USTA Foundation also generously presented BGCMLA with a grant aimed at resurfacing tennis courts at its Challengers Club in South L.A.

"Who Is Stan Smith?" chronicles the remarkable journey of International Tennis Hall of Fame member, sneaker icon, and humanitarian Stan Smith. From his illustrious career as one of the world’s greatest tennis stars to his impactful activism in civil rights and AIDS awareness, Smith's story resonates deeply.

Ginny Ehrlich, CEO of the USTA Foundation, praised Smith as a role model for the thousands of young people involved in NJTL programs nationwide. "He is a shining example of the excellence, resilience, and determination that we aim to instill in the youth," she remarked, emphasizing the honor of being the documentary's official beneficiary.

With over 60 avid participants and spectators, the event unfolded as a remarkable showcase of poker skill, all rallying behind a noble cause - funding vital youth programs. The generosity displayed transcended the gaming tables, as we collectively fundraised over $52,000 throughout the evening.

Empowering Youth Through Music with Sony Music & Notes for Notes

Febuary 1 , 2024 (Watts, CA) - As we commemorate our one year anniversary with Sony Music Group's Beyond The Instrument initiative and Notes for Notes, we are thrilled to once again swing open the doors of our recording studio at Watts-Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club. This collaborative effort, established in 2023, continues to serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for club members eager to nurture their musical talents and aspirations.

At the heart of this initiative lies a profound commitment to nurturing the next generation of music creators. Through a year-round program, students are granted free access to musical instruments, instruction, and state-of-the-art recording equipment. This holistic approach empowers them to develop not only as artists but also as producers, engineers, and composers for film and TV.

As part of our annual program, leading up to the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards, we invited Sony Music Group artists, songwriters, producers, and composers to the Watts-Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club in Los Angeles. Here, they engaged with students, sharing insights and experiences while marveling at the diverse array of projects spanning podcasting, rock bands, film scoring, production, and songwriting.

The roster of confirmed attendees reads like a who's who of music industry talent, including Anze Rozman, Adam Schiff, Camilo Forero, Dahi, DIXSON, Jacob Shea, Kara Talve, Laurentia Editha, Theron Thomas, and Tyler Cole. Their presence underscores the collaborative spirit that defines Beyond The Instrument.

Reflecting on the impact of this initiative, Towalame Austin, Executive Vice President of Philanthropy and Social Impact at Sony Music Group, remarks, "Since its inception, the Beyond the Instrument program has continued to break down obstacles, provide necessary resources, and motivate young students to follow their dreams of pursuing a career in music."

Indeed, the transformation witnessed at the Watts-Willowbrook Club is nothing short of remarkable. Since 2021, the Beyond The Instrument program grant has been instrumental in fostering equity and access to cutting-edge music technology education in high-need schools across California, Tennessee, Florida, and London. The mentorship provided by artists and songwriters like Cat Burns, Noah Cyrus, DIXSON, James Everingham, Lupita Infante, KayCyy, and Adam Lukas has further enriched the experience for students, shaping them into tomorrow's music stars.

Genesis C.: The Rose that Grew from Concrete

Genesis, a resilient young woman who has faced numerous challenges since childhood, continues to inspire with her determination and accomplishments. Raised in a single-mother household with limited income, she endured not only financial hardship but also the trauma of physical abuse. However, her story took a turn for the better when she found refuge and support at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) in the Watts/Willowbrook community.

Through BGCMLA, Genesis found opportunities to enrich her education, advocate for herself and her community, and contribute positively to society. Engaging in programs like College Bound, Power Hour, Keystone, and the Social Justice Club, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery and activism. Genesis became a vocal advocate for environmental justice, using platforms like podcasts and surveys to raise awareness and effect change.

Genesis shares: “I am so proud of the fact that despite the community I am from, being surrounded by people with no ambition, and almost losing hope for myself, I was still able to accomplish one of my greatest goals that will ultimately guide me into my future. It has made me optimistic; I know that I can be 'the rose that grows from concrete,' as the poem from Tupac Shakur states. While concrete is neither a natural nor a healthy environment for any rose to grow in, it was still able to become beautiful and strong. I can also grow out of the circumstance I was raised in and become someone who works for the betterment of society and fights against injustice. ”

Her dedication and passion caught the attention of political leaders, including Congresswoman Nanette Barragan and Senator Alex Padilla, further validating the impact of her work. Genesis's commitment to advocacy led her to pursue an internship with BGCMLA partner Foley & Lardner, solidifying her aspiration to become a lawyer and continue fighting for social justice issues.

BGCMLA Receives $25,000 Grant from Kohl’s National Giveback Initiative

Los Angeles, November 28, 2023 — During Giving Tuesday, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles received a $25,000 grant toward our mission of creating safe spaces for youth to learn, explore, achieve, and dream!

Kohl’s grant to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles was made through the company’s National Giveback Initiative, which provides associates with the opportunity to nominate a nonprofit they’re passionate about for a $25,000 grant. Through the initiative, Kohl’s will donate grants to selected nonprofits nationwide, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to family health and wellness. LOS ANGELES, Nov 19. 2023 -- The Challengers Boys & Girls Club of Metro Los Angeles recently celebrated the opening of their fifth Comebaq Court in partnership with the Shaquille O'Neal Foundation and Icy Hot. This collaboration aims to inspire young athletes and provide safe and accessible spaces for children in underserved communities. With the support of the Lakers Youth Foundation, the new Comebaq Court offers Club members an upgraded basketball space to enhance their skills and enjoy their favorite sport.

Shaquille O'Neal, a Boys & Girls Club alumni and legendary basketball player, has always recognized the importance of restoring basketball courts and crea ting safe places for children to play. "Restoring basketball courts and creating safe places for kids to play has always been important to me," Shaquille O'Neal said. "I was a kid at the Boys & Girls Club once, and the community supported me beyond just sports. I'm thrilled to celebrate the opening of this Comebaq Court at Challengers Boys & Girls Club for our kids to enjoy, as we ensure the next generation has access to safe places like these to follow their dreams."

The official court reveal and dedication took place on November 16 at the Challengers Boys & Girls Club, with Shaquille O'Neal, local government officials, and representatives from various organizations, including the Shaquille O'Neal Foundation, Icy Hot, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA), and Lakers Youth Foundation (LYF), gathering to celebrate. The Lakers Youth Foundation also conducted a basketball clinic for club members, fostering their skills and passion for the sport.

To add an extra special touch to the opening, a slam dunk competition was held on the new court, featuring some of the city's best local dunkers and renowned sports personality Rachel DeMita. The occasion was the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles’ (BGCMLA) Stronger Together Annual Gala, which raised over $682,000 to support academic and enrichment programs for BGCMLA youth across Greater Los Angeles.

The event was hosted by Emmy Award-winning producer and Spectrum News journalist Tanya McRae , and featured the presentation of awards to Super Bowl LVI Champion and 2021 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Andrew Whitworth and the Los Angeles Rams Foundation . These awards recognized their commitment and contributions towards justice and opportunity for youth. Previous honorees have included Kiesha C. Nix of the LA Lakers Youth Foundation, Ed Magee of Fender Play Foundation, and Maggie Baird of Support + Feed.

BGCMLA Awarded Panda Cares Grant to Boost Youth Academic Success

Grant is part of significant $24 million investment in Boys & Girls Clubs in LA County

Today, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles announced a gift of $780,000 from Ballmer Group. This significant support is part of a larger collective gift of $24 million to 18 local Boys & Girls Clubs in LA County.

As one of the nation’s largest youth-serving organizations, Boys & Girls Clubs play a significant role in the lives of nearly 4 million young people each year. More than 5,000 locations in communities across the country create life-enhancing opportunities for kids and teens after school and during the summer.

BGCMLA’s goals are to optimize resources and enable more investment in opportunities to further grow the community they serve. The Ballmer Group’s monetary gift will assist in enhancing programming to meet the clubs’ attendees needs—music and video studios, STEM and innovation labs, sports leagues (including e-sports), art, and mental health services - providing more opportunities for effective youth development.

Poker Players Raise Over $45k for Local Youth

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) hosted their 13th Annual Charity Poker Tournament on Saturday, June 24th at the Motoring Club Los Angeles. The event, which featured a no-limit Texas hold'em tournament, raised over $45,000 for BGCMLA's youth development programs.

Over 60 poker players and spectators participated in the tournament, which was won by Norbi N ., Leslie B ., and Michelle S . The winners each chose a prize from a selection of donated items, including a driving experience for two at Speed Vegas, round-trip charter tickets for two with Surf Air, and LA Rams tickets for two with an autographed jersey from Aaron Donald.

A raffle was also held at the event, with the winner, TJ D., taking home two magnums of wine and four wine tastings courtesy of Austin Hope Winery in Paso Robles.

The generosity of the tournament's attendees helped BGCMLA raise much-needed funds for its youth development programs. These programs provide life-changing opportunities for Los Angeles youth, such as ongoing access to academic enrichment programs, social-emotional wellness support, opportunities to develop leadership skills, and maintaining safe and supportive environments for kids and teens to learn, explore, achieve, and dream.

Cedars Sinai, LA Rams Provide Free Medical Exams to High School Athletes

Los Angeles, CA (May 13, 2023) - In an effort to support underserved student athletes, Cedars-Sinai and the Los Angeles Rams teamed up to provide free medical exams to 150 teenage boys and girls who play tackle and flag football at schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The physicals, which are an annual requirement for LAUSD athletes to participate in school sports, were conducted by nine volunteer physicians from Cedars-Sinai. In addition to the physical exams, on-the-spot electrocardiograms (EKGs) were provided when necessary.

The need for these free physicals was highlighted in a survey conducted by the L.A. Rams with LAUSD last year. Many students, particularly those in underserved areas, lack access to primary care physicians, making it difficult for them to participate in school sports. To ensure that the students can easily access the physicals, LAUSD covered the cost of transportation for each school. In addition, each participant received a Rams Super Bowl LVI hat and snacks provided by Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions.

The physical exams took place at the Challengers Boys & Girls Club, which recently underwent a field refurbishment by Andrew Whitworth, Super Bowl LVI Champion and the 2021 Walter Payton NFL Man Of The Year. The effort, along with the L.A. Rams, Cedars-Sinai, and other partners, kicked off the support of year-round programming at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. Thirty students from five schools, including Mervyn M. Dymally High School, Manual Arts Senior High School, Augustus Hawkins High School, Santee Education Complex, and John C. Fremont High School, were given pre-participation physical exams.

This initiative is a great example of how collaboration between different organizations can help address the needs of underserved communities. By providing free medical exams to student athletes, Cedars-Sinai and the Los Angeles Rams are making it possible for these students to participate in school sports and pursue their athletic dreams.

Yedandy U. Wins 2nd Place in National Arts Contest

BGCA's 2023 National Arts Contest Virtual Awards Show was held on March 28, 2023 on BGCA's National Virtual Club. The event showcased the top entries from the contest, which was open to young people between the ages of 6 and 18 who are members of Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. The contest accepted entries in a wide range of categories, including visual arts, performing arts, writing, and multimedia.

Yedany U., a talented member of the Venice Boys & Girls Club, achieved second place in the competition! In her winning photograph, "Man Singing," she beautifully captures the spirit of the Venice community through the image of a performer using his art to survive. By selecting this subject, she aimed to shed light on the unfortunate reality faced by many individuals in her community. Homelessness, mental illness, and limited resources are pervasive challenges that numerous people grapple with daily. Through her lens, Yedany reminds us of the resilience and strength of those who face such adversity, while also igniting conversations about the need for social change.

"Yedany was not aware that I was planning on submitting her photograph to BGCA National Arts Competiton," said Carmen, Art Director of the Venice Club. "I had sat her down and explained to her it would be an amazing opportunity to try to get her artwork and stories out into the world. Especially when she has started to step outside her comfort zone and speak more freely about what she is interested in. It was a surprise when to her when we found out she placed 2 ^nd place in her category and we want to continue to celebrate her because she deserves to be recognized!"

Yedany has been an active member of the Venice Club for four years. Her journey began when she joined our Mark Twain Middle School Site, where she eagerly participated in various art programs. Even at a young age, she had a deep fascination with the arts, and her interest in photography grew steadily over time. When she learned about the Club's teen photography program at our main site through club advertisements, she decided to seize the opportunity to explore this passion further. She was thrilled to discover that our program encouraged members to freely express their ideas through the camera lens, and found great joy in capturing moments and exploring different perspectives, particularly during our outdoor field trips.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, the Venice Club, and her mentors are immensely proud of Yedany and will continue to celebrate her accomplishments, ensuring that her voice and vision are recognized and amplified! LA Rams Host Girls' Flag Football Clinic at Challengers Club

The Los Angeles Rams honored Women’s History Month by hosting a series of girls’ flag football clinics for local elementary, middle, and high school students. The Rams’ efforts culminated with a skills and drills clinic for more than 200 elementary and middle school girls at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles - Challengers Clubhouse on Thursday, March 30. The participants received co-branded Rams and USA Football “We Are FootbALL” t-shirts, eye black and flag belts.

The organization uplifted and empowered girls across the community during the nine clinics supported by Nike, Gatorade, and USA Football. Attendees participated in football-related drills and competitions led by women from the Los Angeles Legends Sports Organization. Immersing participants in another facet of the world of sports, Rams staff members and women in sports across the Los Angeles region joined the clinics for inspiring panel discussions.

The clinics placed a spotlight on girls’ flag football in Los Angeles, raising awareness and providing access. Throughout March, the Rams hosted camps at Crenshaw High School, Estrella Elementary School, Charles Evans Hughes Junior High School, La Tijera Elementary School, Long Beach Polytechnic High School, Nimitz Middle School, Junipero Serra High School, and a high school clinic at Cal Lutheran University.

Kicking off 2023, Super Bowl LVI Champion and the 2021 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Andrew Whitworth allocated his $250,000 donation, courtesy of the NFL Foundation and Nationwide , to refurbish the track at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles - Challengers Clubhouse. With support from Cedars-Sinai and Bridgestone , the refurbishment included a new 50-yard turf field, new bleachers and updated signage to contribute to the future of the young athletes who call Challengers Clubhouse home.

Regarding the clinics, Patrick Mahoney, Chief Executive Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, said, “We are grateful to the Rams for providing a forum for our girls to hear from inspiring female athletes who shared messages of courage, strength, grit and joy.”

Noel Grigsby, Rams Coordinator of Social Justice and Football Development, added, “We have impacted more than 600 girls throughout Los Angeles with our Women’s History Month efforts. It was wonderful to see how excited the girls were to play football. We’re committed to creating a pipeline for girls’ flag football by growing interest across the region and developing strategies to sustain participation.”

Supporting the growth of girls’ flag, the Rams and USA Football will provide a Girls Flag Football Resource Package with information about rules, grants, equipment and practice plans to high school flag programs throughout Southern California. In addition, the Rams and USA Football will provide equipment kits to 100 local high schools to assist with practices and games.

In January 2022, the Rams and Chargers launched the Los Angeles Girls Flag Football League of Champions. Last season, the league grew from eight teams to 16 teams with the support of Nike, USA Football and Gatorade. The Rams and Chargers provided players with uniforms in partnership with Nike, stipends for coaches, coaching manuals, officials, athletic trainers, as well as equipment and transportation for the five-week season. The goal of the League of Champions is to create more opportunities for young women to engage in football.

BGCMLA's Genesis C. Wins LA County Youth of the Year Competition

We are thrilled to announce that Genesis Cruz, a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA), has won the LA County Youth of the Year competition! Over two consecutive days, Genesis competed against 15 other YOYs from LA County Boys & Girls Clubs. Her journey to victory was made even more remarkable by the extraordinary circumstances under which she competed. In Round 1, Genesis competed via Zoom from a hotel room in Washington D.C. She then flew home the next morning to compete in Round 2 from Los Angeles on the same day!

While in D.C., Genesis and BGCMLA's College Bound Liaison, Mariana Cervantes, were lobbying for additional federal support for Boys & Girls Clubs. Genesis made a significant impression in meetings with Senator Padilla, members of the Senate Agriculture committee, and the offices of Syndey Kamlager-Dove, Robert Garcia, and Maxine Waters.

Genesis will represent both BGCMLA and LA County at the CA State Youth of the Year Competition on March 22nd in Sacramento. We would like to recognize the efforts of our team in supporting the Youth of the Year process. Mariana Cervantes provided excellent leadership, and Mirna Gutierrez at Jordan High School in Watts offered unwavering support. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Michelle Gomez Chinchilla, our executive leader, who ensured that our YOY program in LA was the best it could be. BGCMLA Youth Attend Creed III Health & Wellness Event

In 2023, the highly anticipated Creed III film premiered in theaters across the country. This movie and its accompanying soundtrack highlighted some of the most pressing issues facing communities today, including the impact of incarceration on youth and families, mental health, and trauma that many people of color experience.

To support these important messages and to give back to the community, an event was organized that would provide helpful resources and services to those in need. The event organizers aimed to be as inclusive as possible and reached out to the ASL/BSL community, troubled youth of color, and adults struggling with mental health as a result of incarceration and generational trauma.

The event took place in the heart of Los Angeles, in a location that closely aligned with the gym we saw Adonis Creed train and develop in the film. This location was chosen because it would provide a significant impact on the community and help to draw attention to the issues being addressed.

One of the key services offered at the event was recreational therapy. Trained professionals were on hand to provide lessons and tools through boxing and basketball, helping attendees to build emotional and physical strength. These activities provided a healthy outlet for participants to release stress and negative emotions.

In addition to recreational therapy, a trained yoga instructor offered breathwork sessions. Attendees were taught breathing techniques that they could use to process and face various challenges and emotional trauma. These sessions were especially helpful for those who struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

Overall, the event was a huge success, providing much-needed resources and support to members of the community who needed it most. It served as a reminder of the power of community outreach and the impact that even small gestures can have on people's lives.

Andrew Whitworth Unveils New Challengers Field

Super Bowl LVI Champion and the 2021 Walter Payton Man of the Year Andrew Whitworth has allocated his $250,000 donation, courtesy of the NFL Foundation and Nationwide , to refurbish the track and field at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles - Challengers Clubhouse . With support from Cedars-Sinai and Bridgestone, the refurbishment includes a new 50-yard turf field, new bleachers, shaded and covered seating areas and updated signage to contribute to the future of the young athletes who call Challengers Clubhouse home. Today, the field is being unveiled during a celebratory ribbon-cutting at 4:00 p.m. PT, with remarks from Andrew Whitworth, Chief Executive Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles Patrick Mahoney, Executive Director of Women’s and Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s Cindy Chavira, Executive Director of Women and Children’s Services at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s Michelle Souza, and Bridgestone Retail Operations Region Manager Brandon Gleason. The Rams will host a free football clinic focusing on NFL combine and fundamental position drills for more than 100 local youth served by Challengers Clubhouse following the ribbon cutting.

Serving over 150 kids per day, the Challengers Clubhouse has the only track and field in the community and is a home for local football games, track & field tournaments, summer camps and sport clinics. In addition, the track and field is used by 300 elementary students from ICEF (Inner City Education Foundation) Innovation Los Angeles Charter School every morning. Since 1968, Challengers Clubhouse has served more than 34,000 youth.

“I have had the opportunity to be involved with Boys & Girls Clubs my entire NFL career making this field dedication incredibly meaningful to me,” said Andrew Whitworth, 2021 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. “Whether outside Cincinnati or in South LA, the impact of Boys & Girls Clubs is a constant in the lives of kids who need it most. Today is about more than a field, this is about locking arms with Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles and joining them in their daily investment in our youth.”

Four-time Pro-Bowler and two-time All-Pro Andrew Whitworth was a core pillar of the Rams offense, becoming the first 40-year-old offensive lineman to start an NFL game in nearly two decades. Whitworth recorded 239 career games with 235 starts during his 16-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams, exhibiting tremendous excellence on the field and outstanding community service off the field. His work in the community addresses the often-unseen issues that continue to plague underserved communities in Los Angeles and beyond.

The new field will serve as a site for the newly established and free Los Angeles Rams Flag Football League that will kick off at the end of the month. In partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the league will serve more than 300 youth (ages 5-14) from eight Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Southern California. Each league will feature an 8-week season. The Rams will provide reversible flag jerseys, flag belts, footballs and coaching resource guides for the league.

The launch of the flag league will be paired with a content piece highlighting the efforts of Andrew Whitworth, the Los Angeles Rams, Cedars-Sinai and Bridgestone, and the impact the refurbished field will have on the community.

Sony Music Group Expands Beyond the Instrument Initiative

Sony Music Group (SMG) today announced the global expansion of its annual Beyond The Instrument initiative. Now in its third year, the program will include academic activations in the U.S. and U.K. throughout the month of February, providing international resources and exposure to music professionals and creatives and collaborating with community partners to help prepare future music leaders. Since its launch, Beyond The Instrument has donated thousands of dollars’ worth of instruments, equipment, software and curriculums as well as provided mentoring and is on target to support nearly 10,000 students over the course of five years. This year, SMG will work with non-profit partners Notes for Notes® and Fender Play Foundation® to bring music education to students through innovative and sustainable programs that put instruments and learning tools directly in the classroom.

On Wednesday, February 1 – ahead of the 65 ^th Annual GRAMMY Awards – Beyond The Instrument will launch in Los Angeles, California at the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Los Angeles – Watts-Willowbrook Clubhouse. Together with Sony Music artists, songwriters and composers, Boys & Girls Clubs youth members will join a discussion with KayCyy, DIXSON, Adam Lukas (Bleeding Fingers Music) and James Everingham (Bleeding Fingers Music), designed to inspire U.S. attendees’ personal development and musical aspirations. In addition, national non-profit organization Notes for Notes® with the support of SMG, will also open its largest recording studio in LA at the clubhouse providing club members with year-round free access to explore, create and record music. With access to guitars, drums, keys/synths, DJ and production gear, as well as headphones and microphones donated by Sony Electronics, the fully equipped digital recording studio for aspiring young artists will work alongside a talented Producer to develop their skills as artists, producers, engineers and film/TV composers.

The program will launch for the first time in London, England on Thursday, February 9, at Harris Academy Greenwich, a school in south east London, prior to the BRIT Awards. Joined by Sony Music artist and triple BRIT Award Nominee Cat Burns, the students will get a chance to perform and then participate in an active discussion about Burns’ career – and the evolution from being a BRIT School student and busking on the Southbank, to achieving the biggest debut hit and top single by a female artist in 2022 with Go. The school was selected in partnership with music education charity Restore the Music UK (RTM), who received a Sony Music UK Social Justice Fund grant in 2022. RTM noted that school has an excellent record in developing its music program and also won the RTM ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition last year. Fender Play Foundation® will provide educational workshops and core music and sound equipment to participating students and teachers thereafter. Established in 2019, the Fender Play Foundation® (FPF) is a 501(c)(3) organization on a mission to equip, educate and inspire the next generation of players through music by providing access to instruments in schools that need it most and has already gifted guitars, basses and ukuleles to over 15,000 students in the United States. This partnership is the Foundation’s first in the UK.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles & Boys & Girls Club of Venice Have Merged!

Today, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles announced the merger of two of Los Angeles’ most-tenured Clubs, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) and Boys & Girls Clubs of Venice (BGCV). With pro bono legal assistance from Latham & Watkins LLP and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP, both boards approved the merger plan in late 2022, and the organizations officially merged into one entity in January 2023.

BGCMLA’s merger will optimize resources and enable more investment in opportunities to further the mission. The integration will enable enhanced programming to meet local needs—music and video studios, STEM and innovation labs, sports leagues (including e-sports), art, and mental health services. Cohesive implementation of programs across all sites will allow for better evaluation at scale, providing more opportunities for effective youth development.

“I’m so excited to join the BGCMLA team and be a part of creating lasting change in the lives of the children and teens we serve,” says Emily Harvey, CEO of BGCV. “We’re not just merging; we’re changing the landscape for youth development across metro Los Angeles.”

Every year, nearly four million young people are served by Boys & Girls Clubs. To show their continued support in preparing today’s youth for a brighter tomorrow, Ross Stores, Inc. is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of America with a three-week program called, “Help Local Kids Learn.” Beginning February 11, customers in Metro Los Angeles can make a monetary contribution at their local Ross Dress for Less (“Ross”) location during checkout to be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, through March 5. BGCMLA Awarded California Arts Council Grant

The California Arts Council has announced a grant award of $36,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) as part of its Creative Youth Development program in its second round of funding for 2022.

The Creative Youth Development program (formerly Youth Arts Action) is rooted in the CAC’s belief that arts learning is an essential tool for healthy human development and that it should be available to all young people throughout California. The CAC envisions that all of California’s young people are provided with meaningful, culturally responsive arts-learning experiences so that they can reach their full potential. The grant will support BGCMLA's youth art and music programs across our Clubhouses.

BGCMLA was featured as part of a larger announcement from the California Arts Council, with grant awards for its Cycle B programming totaling more than $41 million across more than 900 grants supporting nonprofit organizations and units of government throughout the state.

All told, the projected sum of grants to be awarded for 2022’s regular program funding cycle is more than $72 million—the biggest annual investment in the California Arts Council’s 46-year history, largely supported by the $40 million one-time boost in support for the agency’s creative youth and arts education development programs.

“The resilience and creativity of California’s arts and cultural field in these last three years has been remarkable,” said California Arts Council Director Jonathan Moscone. “We are proud to be able to support the great work that California's artists, culture bearers and cultural workers are doing within our communities as an indelible part of our state’s identity.”

Cycle B’s programs include five funding opportunities for arts education and creative youth development, and related arts workforce development. Additionally, the cycle offered funding opportunities for administering organizations to regrant funds for folk and traditional arts and individual artists fellowship programs. Operational support for statewide and regional arts service organizations and networks was also available during this round of grant funding.

Caleb Williams Hosts Anti-Bullying Event

Sophomore quarterback Caleb Williams’ passion shone through his foundation’s effort to promote awareness for bullying. Through the Caleb Cares Foundation, Williams’ new partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles hosted an anti-bullying assembly at the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation gym during National Bullying Prevention Month. “I was in the Boys & Girls Club, and being able to give back to make sure they are being seen and heard is an awesome experience,” Williams said.

The Boys & Girls Clubs encouraged their students to take a stand against bullying by displaying posters that read “Be a Game Changer,” “Real Players Don’t Bully” and “Take a Stand And Unite Against Bullying.”

Students from the ages of six to 11 sat in the bleachers of the gym and waited for the anti-bullying assembly to start.

The assembly started with fifth grade leaders asking Williams questions about life as a student-athlete, Caleb Cares and bullying. When the fifth grade leaders asked their questions to Williams, he encouraged the students by telling them, “You got this.”

One fifth grade leader asked Williams how he handles bullying as a football player. “My support system, which includes my dad, my mom and my mentors are always there for me whenever I need to speak up and talk about anything,” Williams said, “and staying consistent with a routine helps me. For students, you should find someone who is able to sit there and speak to you so that you can talk and let everything out.” After Williams answered questions, the Boys & Girls Clubs facilitated anti-bullying skits for students to understand how to identify different forms of bullying: physical, verbal, social and cyber.

USC Annenberg undergraduate and graduate students volunteered to act out the anti-bullying skits with fifth graders.

One of the nine Annenberg volunteers, first-year graduate public relations and advertising student Anayissa Rebollo expressed how leading cyberbullying skits inspired her to volunteer again. “As not only an SC student, but as someone who grew up going to community centers I want to remind students that they can achieve their dreams because a lot of the kids that I talked to said that they wanted to go to USC,” Robello said.

Williams’ foundation presented the first-ever Caleb Cares Hero Award to a student who modeled kindness, empathy, respect and has been a good model to their peers. This award will be presented to a new student every month for the next year. The Challengers Clubhouse director Alejandra Liera announced that fourth grader Nylah F. was awarded the first Caleb Cares Hero Award. Liera said Nylah overcame challenges, is a leader to her peers in school and the Challengers Clubhouse and refrained from retaliating against bullying.

Ferns received gifts from Williams’ partnerships: a Beats by Dre wireless earbuds, Futuremood Aurabliss Sunglasses, Hall of Goats’ Caleb Cares Hero Award t-shirt, Fatburger and Alo gift certificates, custom bobblehead of Williams and a USC Annenberg backpack. “I feel awesome,” Nylah said. “I was proud of myself and I was pretty shy.” Nylah was inspired to continue to show her peers how to be kind to others in school and at the Boys & Girls Clubs at Metro Los Angeles. “If someone is feeling hurt, sad, uncomfortable, I will rub their back and ask how they are feeling,” Nylah said. “Then, I would say sometimes life is hard but you have to get through the hard things first and tell them to take a deep breath.”

Williams’ ordered a Fatburger food truck to feed the students, volunteers and Boys & Girls Clubs’ staff members. The quarterback handed boxes of hamburgers and chips to the students. With about 50 students waiting for their hamburgers, some students stepped out of line to throw the football and ask Williams for a signature. At one point, he played rock, paper, scissors with a student and a line of students formed as each student waited eagerly for their chance to take on the Heisman Trophy candidate.

Williams hopes to be a frequent visitor at the Boys & Girls Clubs and for students not to view him differently due to his position on the gridiron. “Hopefully, the students will all know me and won’t look at me as Caleb who plays football,” Williams said. “Hopefully, the students see me only as the Caleb who comes and supports them.” The anti-bullying event opened Williams’ eyes to the impact he is leaving on students for bullying and mental health awareness. He hopes to make another effort soon to continue spreading awareness.

Boys & Girls Club Metro LA Brings Hydroponic Garden to Watts-Willowbrook

Long before local grocer Vons donated an abandoned storefront, post-riots, as a safe space for his community meetings, Lou Dantzler, the beloved visionary founder of Boys & Girls Club of Metro Los Angeles’s (BGCMLA) Challengers Clubhouse, was gathering weekly with groups of kids under a maple tree in South LA that provided a respite from the sun and noise of the city as well as an opportunity to commune with nature. It was part of his mission to provide exposure, mentorship, and support to youth in the Metro LA area.

It’s fitting that the latest development at the BGCMLA’s Watts-Willowbrook Clubhouse, a sister site of the Challengers’ Clubhouse located in Watts on the border of Compton, is a multi-week curriculum teaching participating children the science behind their favorite plant-based foods, the connection between personal wellness and food advocacy, and the cultural significance of gardens and growth in their own neighborhood and beyond.

This program was developed in coordination with Support + Feed and Wild Elements. The 12-month pilot began last month, and it is the hope of all involved that the program will continue permanently.

“One of the most important aspects of youth development is food education and positive nutrition,” said Kimberly Washington, Vice President of Resource Development for BGCMLA.

“In support of healthy lifestyles for our kids, we partnered with Wild Elements and Support + Feed to teach hydroponic farming to the next generation.”

Wild Elements Founder and CEO Nikki Eslami explained, “Hydroponics is one of the best sustainable farming methods, as it bridges agriculture, technology, and innovation to grow nutrient-dense produce anywhere and anytime. At Wild Elements, we believe that sustainable farming is key to protecting the future of our planet, as well as the health of our communities. Agriculture is responsible for 75% of global deforestation, and over 70% of our global freshwater supply is used for agriculture.”

This method reportedly uses up to 10 times less water than conventional agriculture, which is especially important in water-scarce regions like California.

At the Hydro-Wild Lab, Club members will benefit from hands-on exploration of farm-to-table and environmentalism through communal gardening, cooking classes, and field trips spent in nature—which harken back to Dantzler’s early meetings in the seventies and eighties.

Washington noted, “This unique program developed in partnership across all three organizations is tailored specifically for the Watts-Willowbrook Clubhouse students and community to address the nexus of food insecurity and the history of food systems, healthy eating, and climate change.”

Maggie Baird, founder of Support & Feed and incidentally Billie Eilish’s mother, added, “The food we bring to the program is nutritious, delicious and completely plant-based. We also bring vegetables and fruits that kids get to try, sometimes for the very first time.”

This presents another element of exploration for the children.

The hourlong weekly program is open to all Club members at Watts/Willowbrook Clubhouse, giving youth the time to seed, watch, and learn about plants prior to and during harvest.

“Our Watts community has been long challenged by a lack of access to healthy food,” stated Patrick Mahoney, President & CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs Metro Los Angeles. “The Hydro-Wild Lab will provide an opportunity for BGCMLA youth to grow and consume healthy foods but will also serve as a critical tool for community and family dialogue around creating healthier eating habits. In a community where diabetes has a 72% higher mortality rate than the average community, the Hydro-Wild Lab will serve as a great education and awareness tool that can help save lives.”

Wild Elements, Support + Feed and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles plan to scale and utilize the Hydro-Wild Lab as a model to bring innovative solutions to other communities nationwide.

“This educational and collaborative initiative unites the strengths and networks of all three organizations and further expands critical conversations about nutrient-dense food access in urban communities,” said Eslami. “Through this program, we are aiming to educate and engage students to become the next generation of sustainable farmers, food scientists, and climate activists.”

A gala celebrating the donors, partners, volunteers, and youth who’ve made this and other programs possible for BGCMLA will be held on Friday, August 26th at 6:00 p.m., at the City Club of Los Angeles. There will be silent and live auctions, dinner and cocktails, partner spotlights, and musical performances from Club members.

Although Dantzler, a South Carolina transplant to South Central LA, passed away in the Summer of 2006, his legacy of innovation and providing a place for youth to grow and learn in a safe environment lives on. That abandoned storefront is now a $6 million facility that has served thousands of boys and girls to date, yet through the Hydro-Wild Lab, the organic richness symbolized by that maple tree is not forgotten.

This unique program developed in partnership across all three organizations is tailored specifically for the Watts-Willowbrook Clubhouse students and community to address the nexus of food insecurity and the history of food systems, healthy eating, and climate change.

Hydroponic farms are superstars of sustainable agriculture and are quickly emerging as an important pathway to increase access to produce in both urban and rural environments farming provides communities with a mechanism to farm in controlled environments indoors, while in rural settings, hydroponic as they require fewer natural resources.

In urban areas where there is no land or healthy soil to grow food, hydroponic farms use less land than conventional ones, which helps overused fields regenerate. Hydroponic farms use up to 10 times less water than conventional farms, a benefit in drought-prone areas like California. Growing produce locally is also important as food begins to lose its nutrient-density once it’s harvested. In short, hydroponics is one key way to grow food so it benefits people and the planet.

Team Liquid Launches New Challengers Esports Lab at the Challengers Clubhouse

Los Angeles, CA - On Wednesday, February 23, Team Liquid and Boys & Girls Club Metro Los Angeles celebrated the launch of their esports & STEM education partnership by hosting a dedication ceremony for the opening of the new Challengers Esports Lab. The ribbon cutting ceremony featured leadership and fan-favorite talent, including Team Liquid Co-CEO Steve Arhancet, Boys & Girls Club CEO Patrick Mahoney, WNBA Champion Ariel Powers and popular Super Smash Bros. The partnership, which falls under Liquid’s ongoing mission to expand STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education for students in underserved communities, kicked off at Challengers Clubhouse – BGCMLA’s largest location. The center is located within an internet desert and faces the uncommonly recognized challenge of accessing affordable, high-speed internet. In addition to a suite of hardware and internet upgrades, perfect for competitive gaming and wider STEM learning activities, Team Liquid will subsidize high-speed internet at the center for three years.

Patrick Mahoney Named Chief Executive Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles

(January 29, 2021) – Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) announced today the board of directors has named Patrick Mahoney as chief executive officer, effective January 25, 2021. Mahoney has over 20 years of experience in non-profit management and strategic development, and most recently served as director of organizational development for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), where he oversaw the function in the Los Angeles, San Diego and Arizona markets. During his tenure with BGCA, he also served as a founding member of the organization’s national Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council.

“We are thrilled to welcome Patrick Mahoney as our new chief executive officer,” says Karen E. Pointer, chair of the Board of Directors. We have had the pleasure and privilege of working with Patrick over the past few years through his leadership role at Boys & Girls Clubs of America and we are confident in his ability to lead our organization. Mahoney began his management career in market research and consulting, helping guide major telecoms on their expansion into media, which led to an executive role at Disney/ABC TV. Prior to joining Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 2018, Mahoney served for six years as president of Charity Brands, a consultancy that worked on sustainable philanthropy with global clients including Deloitte, Direct Relief, and The United Nations Foundation.

As chief executive officer, Mahoney will oversee the organization’s four club sites serving over 1800 youth and families in Los Angeles County. He will be responsible for leading the organization’s strategic direction, business operations, program development, brand reputation, talent recruitment, fundraising efforts, and stakeholder engagement. He will also serve as the organization’s primary ambassador and lead communicator.

Mahoney graduated from Boston College with a bachelor’s degree and holds certificates in diversity and inclusion from Cornell University and organizational development from DePaul University.

Los Angeles Rams Players Participate in "Giving Tuesday" by Awarding $750,000 to Local Social Justice Non-Profits

LOS ANGELES, CA - Dec. 20, 2020 - In honor of “Giving Tuesday,” the Los Angeles Rams players are awarding $750,000 to 25 non-profits focused on social justice across the greater Los Angeles region.

Following numerous tragic events this past year, including the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, Rams players came together to discuss how they could help address injustices that continue to plague society. Focused on long-term, systemic change, the players decided to pool resources together to financially support organizations who are doing this critical work.

The Rams invited 25 social justice non-profits to share with the players information about their work, those they serve and how the players could be of the greatest assistance. After listening and learning, the players rewarded each organization with a donation ranging from $20,000 to $50,000.

MICHAEL BROCKERS, JOHNNY HEKKER, SEBASTIAN JOSEPH-DAY and ANDREW WHITWORTH helped lead the process, participating in virtual conversations with the organizations and determining how to allocate the funds.

“As a leader on this team, it was important to me to be part of these conversations,” said Brockers. “My teammates and I are very aware of the social injustices that continue to occur, and we made a decision to become actively involved in helping to be part of the change that is desperately needed. It was awesome to hear from so many different leaders and non-profits that are putting the work in to make real change and I’m honored to support them.”

“In my 15 years in the NFL, this has definitely been one of the most inspiring things that I have had the opportunity to be part of,” said Whitworth. “It was an amazing process that allowed us to learn about a variety of non-profits working across Los Angeles to positively impact lives and advance social justice. The chance to hear directly from them on how we could help left us both humbled and motivated. On behalf of my teammates, we thank them for their daily passion and commitment to drive equity and are proud to support their important work.”

Three hours of virtual learning assistance donated for every checking account opened until October 15

The donation, provided by Futurelink, Inc. and its non-profit STEAM Literacy partner, iFusionFoundation, will help families with the much-needed lifeline of having a computer.

BGCMLA Stands For Equality

The Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles continues to demand an end to dehumanization, prejudice, bigotry, hatred and injustice in all their forms. The senseless deaths of black people at the hands of some police officers cannot be tolerated and requires new measures of accountability.

For over 60 years our Clubs have provided hope and opportunity for all youth, particularly those who need us most. We’ve promised to inspire and enable young people to realize their full potential, preparing them for a world where they can participate as full and equal citizens. This is a reality that is not available to add due to institutionalized and systemic racism and bigotry.

We take a stand for social justice, equity and inclusion, and against dehumanization, bigotry, discrimination, oppression and hate. We have avoided the term “races” intentionally, because we are all part of the same race – the HUMAN RACE.

BGCMLA pledges to use our influence, affluence, access and privilege to help make sure that the words of the U.S. Constitution ring true for everyone. We pledge to work towards eliminating disparities and demanding accountability on behalf of our youth so that success is within reach of all the children.

We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matters movement and pledge in the memory of George Floyd, to listen, learn and act in order to rid our communities of all vestiges of dehumanization, bigotry, prejudice and hatred, which are now so deeply woven into the fabric of our nation.

Our support will be used to foster civic engagement, accountability and leadership skills so that Club members can safely become agents of and allies for change.

LA Bowl to Give 21,000 Pounds of Fresh Produce to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor’s Food Drives on July 10 and July 17

LOS ANGELES – July 9, 2020 – LA Bowl, a new annual college bowl game at SoFi Stadium, is teaming with three Los Angeles-based organizations to help aid families and youths in need. LA Bowl in collaboration with Worldwide Produce is giving 600 boxes, 21,000 pounds, of fresh produce and dairy to struggling families and those that have been affected by the global pandemic at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor locations. Additionally, LA Bowl is providing scholarships for students through Inglewood-based nonprofit, One For All. These efforts are the first of many initiatives that LA Bowl, Boys & Girls Clubs and One For All will partner on throughout the year.

“We are excited to announce LA Bowl’s first community partners. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor, and One For All are all incredible pillars of their community,” said Jason Gannon, managing director, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. “These are challenging times for all and as a new neighbor to Southern California, LA Bowl is committed to supporting our local community’s families and youth.”

Beginning December 2020, LA Bowl will feature the Mountain West Conference football champions versus the No. 5 selection from the Pac-12 Conference. The annual event will be hosted at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park for six years, from 2020-2025. SoFi Stadium is the centerpiece of Hollywood Park, a near 300-acre world-class sports and entertainment destination being developed by Los Angeles Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke in Inglewood, Calif. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor, and One For All are LA Bowl’s first community partners.

On Friday, July 10, LA Bowl in collaboration with Worldwide Produce is giving 300 boxes of fresh produce and dairy at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor. LA Bowl is working alongside Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor to distribute the boxes from 4pm to 7pm. Boxes include potatoes, carrots, pre-cut romaine lettuce, apples, low fat milk, low fat yogurt, and unsalted butter. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor helps families in San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, and South Bay.

“Weekend Wellness Food Program is vital in providing enough food for our families from Friday evening through Sunday. This MUCH NEEDED ‘Weekend Wellness’ program will distribute non-perishable food items to families every weekend through the 2020-2021 fiscal year. On Friday, July 17, LA Bowl will help distribute an additional 300 boxes of produce and dairy at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles from 3pm to 4:15pm. Boys & Girls Clubs Metro Los Angeles aids families in Watts/Willowbrook, Bell Gardens and South Los Angeles, and Watts-area housing projects, including the Jordan Downs and Nickerson Gardens.

Each applicant is eligible for up to $500, provided they meet the requirements set forth by One For All. Scholarship recipients are announced in August and December of 2020.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (July 1, 2020) –The Los Angeles based global streetwear brand, Anti Social Social Club (ASSC), today unveiled a partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles with proceeds supporting the mental health and wellness of members.

National studies reveal that 20% of youth, ages 13-18 live with a mental health condition. Additionally, 37% of students with a mental illness over the age of 14 drop out of school – the highest dropout rate of any disability group. Additionally, due to stigma and limited resources, identifying mental health services and supports can be particularly challenging for families of color and vulnerable populations. To support with accessibility, mental health services are available on-site at the clubs and through telehealth services.

Anti Social Social Club initially began as a creative outlet to cope with mental health issues. Since its founding in 2015, the brand has become a community for those who often felt like they were never part of one. ASSC aims to continue this sentiment and reinvest in the youth and wellness.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles Awarded California Arts Council Arts Education Exposure Grant

State funds support the enhancement and expansion of the Arts Programming at two Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles Clubhouses: Bell Gardens & Watts Willowbrook.

Los Angeles, CA – Today the California Arts Council announced a grant award of $19,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles as part of its Arts Education Exposure program.

With funding from the California Arts Council, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles will support the Art Programming at Bell Gardens & Watts Willowbrook Clubhouses. The Clubhouses will be able to take even more kids on high-quality and impactful field trips and off-site excursions to LA’s premiere cultural institutions, exhibits and performances. Each Club site will host at least four field trips, with up to 50 youth participating in each trip. At least 100 different children and teens will be impacted by these off-site excursions.

Presently, Watts/Willowbrook hosts a teen photography class and a hands-on arts and crafts course for all ages. A Michaels (craft stores) MAKE Space grant recipient, Bell Gardens has a newly renovated Arts and Crafts room where the Club hosts a number of arts and crafts programming.

“We are immensely grateful for the California Arts Council’s generous support of arts education and programming at our Bell Gardens and Watts/Willowbrook Clubhouses,” said Karen Pointer, Chair of the Board of Directors of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. “Arts education should be a part of every child’s world of possibility. Art is fuel for imagination and a source of passion. The most effective way to understand art is to experience it many forms up close and in person. Museums, exhibits and other art-filed spaces are wormholes to other worlds where ideas, beauty and truths are on vivid display. The California Arts Council’s grant will help ensure our youth are able to peek through the wormholes to experience firsthand the depth, sparkle and boundless creativity in artistic expression.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles was featured as part of a larger announcement from the California Arts Council of more than 1,500 grants awarded to nonprofit organizations and units of government throughout the state for their work in support of the agency’s mission to strengthen arts, culture, and creative expression as the tools to cultivate a better California for all. The investment of nearly $30 million marks a more than $5 million increase over the previous fiscal year, and the largest in California Arts Council history.

Organizations were awarded grants across 15 different program areas addressing access, equity, and inclusion; community vibrancy; and arts learning and engagement; and directly benefiting our state's communities, with youth, veterans, returned citizens, and California's historically marginalized communities key among them. Successful projects aligned closely with the agency's vision of a California where all people flourish with universal access to and participation in the arts.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Arts Council recognizes that some grantees may need to postpone, modify, or cancel their planned activities supported by CAC funds, due to state and local public health guidelines. Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates

UPDATE (as of 4:00 PM 3/13/20): On Friday, March 13, 2020, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) announced School Closures to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). After careful consideration and effective immediately, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) locations - Challengers, Watts Willowbrook, Bell Gardens, Nickerson Gardens and Jordan Downs will be closed beginning Monday, March 16, 2020.

Safety is the number one priority of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, and we are doing everything possible to keep children, our staff, and volunteers protected from the COVID-19 virus. Due to the recent cases in Los Angeles, we have decided to close Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) locations - Challengers, Watts Willowbrook, Bell Gardens, Nickerson Gardens and Jordan Downs beginning Monday, March 16, 2020. BGCMLA Clubs will follow the duration of the school closures unless stated otherwise.

In the meantime, we are advising all our Club staff, families, and youth to continue to take precautions as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

LAUSD will have Family Resource Centers available to families starting Wednesday, March 18th from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children will be able to have a warm meal, engage with peers and pursue different studies. For additional information, please call the following hotline: 213.443.1300.

As a reminder, we recommend these preventive actions every family should take to prevent exposure to COVID-19.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

• Stay home when you are sick.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

• Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a face mask:

- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face-mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.

- Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.

• Wash your hands often:

- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

- It takes an average of 11.8 seconds to sing the entire Happy Birthday song, so if you sing it twice, that will ensure you've scrubbed long enough. This is a great method to share with children in your family. While this measure is simple, it is effective.

- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

- For more information about hand-washing, see CDC’s Hand-washing website

• The CDC also provides specific guidance for travelers.

At this time, there is no evidence that children are more susceptible. Children should engage in usual preventive actions to avoid infection, including cleaning hands often using soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, avoiding people who are sick, and staying up to date on vaccinations, including influenza vaccine.

Katy delivers smiles with Amazon this holiday season!

Bell Gardens Clubhouse transformed into a winter wonderland on Wednesday, December 18th, 2019 with special guest, Katy Perry.

Members received the surprise of a lifetime as they entered the festive transformation of the Bell Gardens Clubhouse complete with real snow. As they all sat down with hot chocolate in hand, Katy Perry tip toed into the room and surprised the entire group! After reading a fun Christmas story, all the kids geared up in winter clothes for a big reveal. With the entire Clubhouse standing in front of a large tent, Katy stuck her head out and opened the flaps to reveal a winter wonderland full of REAL SNOW. As all the kids entered the snow filled tent, Katy said " Alexa, make it snow" and it began to snowing throughout the entire room.

After two hours of playing in the snow, sledding, making crafts, and drinking hot chocolate, all kids went back inside for a final surprise. Each member received a handpicked gift from their wish-list thanks to Amazon. Additionally, Katy worked with Amazon to purchase all of Bell Gardens Clubhouse entire Amazon Charity Wish List and presented the Clubhouse with a $25,000 check.

to create safer spaces for Los Angeles kids and teens .

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 01, 2019 – Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles announced today they will receive a $50,000 grant from Lowe’s to renovate the restrooms at the Challengers Clubhouse in South Los Angeles to ensure our members have access to clean, efficient, and safe environment. The grant is part of Renovation Across the Nation, a partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Lowe’s that awards critical need grants and volunteer support to complete much-needed improvements and renovations.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles was selected as one of the 26 Clubs awarded with the grant this year. Lowe’s support will help the Club make critical improvements to ensure the Club remains a safe and inviting place for Los Angeles youth who need it most.

The renovations will begin in December in partnership with the local Lowe’s and are scheduled to be finished at the beginning of 2020.

BGCMLA receives $25,000 from Fender Play Foundation to Launch Music Program

Funds support musical instruments and instruction for 200 South Los Angeles youth.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 24, 2019) – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles announced the award of a $25,000 grant from the Fender Play Foundation to launch of a new music program at their Watts-Willowbrook Clubhouse that will support 200 students.

The contribution will help 200 local youth learn to play music with a newly remodeled and interactive space, instructors and high-quality instruments including Squier® guitars and basses , Rumble™ and Champion amplifiers , earphones, Fender Play® e-learning stations for the Clubs’ youth to learn how to play guitar, ukulele and bass.

“This donation is greatly appreciated and will allow our youth to learn new skills. Musical education enhances student achievement and can foster team building skills. We are confident that these new resources will help our students succeed in the classroom and in life,” said Calvin Lyons, President and CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles .

We are excited to launch this program with the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Los Angeles, Watts-Willowbrook to equip local youth with tools that encourage artistic self-expression,” said Christina Stejskal, President of the Fender Play Foundation. “The mission of the Fender Play Foundation is to equip, educate and inspire the next generation of young players. Challengers Clubhouse Art Therapy Mural with Blue Shield of California & Wellnest

Los Angeles (August 08, 2019) - Challengers Clubhouse celebrated the unveiling of an eight-week mural project. Members painted a 20-foot by 60-foot wall outside the Clubhouse with community muralist, Moses Ball. Through the support of Blue Shield California and WellNest , middle and high school aged members worked alongside Moses in developing a mural based on the hopes and dreams of our members and community. The program focused on helping our youth release tension and learn how to deal with everyday trauma through art therapy.

" Its an honor and blessing to be on a mural because it will be there for years " - Hasina, Challengers Club member.

To commemorate the completion of the mural, Challengers Clubhouse hosted an end of summer celebration unveiling the mural with leadership from BGCMLA, Blue Shield Promise Health Plan, and Wellnest. Members who participated in the mural received a certificate of participation signed by the CEO of each organization for their achievement. Art was used by our youth as a tool of expression allowing them to share their daily experiences in a safe place and project them into a mural. As part of Blue Shield of California's Community Art Therapy Program, each week social workers and behavioral health specialists joined Mr. Ball in encouraging our youth to express themselves.

BGCMLA's Hip Hop and Step Team kicked off the reveal by showcasing a routines to Lil Naz's Old Town Road. The brightly colored wall behind them represented their faces and showcased their dreams as they performed. In the mural, a girl, inspired by Nipsey Hussle, stands with a microphone with her peer dressed as an aviator inspired by Bessie Coleman. The rest of the afternoon was celebrated with food, music, and great sense of accomplishment. Thank you to Blue Shield of California and Wellnest for providing our youth the opportunity to inspire #GreatFutures for many years to come.

Wellnest’s programs are provided at four community-based centers, 34 school-based sites (7 charter), four onsite offices, co-location at a Federally Qualified Health Center, and directly to clients through field-based programming. Wellnest supports over 4,000 children, youth, and families annually as they reach their goals in school, build healthy relationships, and enjoy newfound emotional well-being.

Mural project with artist Lionel Milton at BGCMLA - Watts Willowbrook Clubhouse!

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles is proud to partner with Count on me Family Foundation in hosting Art Inspiration 2019 with New Orleans based artist Lionel Milton ! In its inaugural year, Art Inspiration 2019 brought together our brilliant youth with artist Lionel Milton in a week-long program creating a 8 ft X 21 ft mural inspired by our members own ideas and inspirations.

The program and mural took place at our Watts Willowbrook Clubhouse engaging and encouraging our members to become creative young artists. Together, the mural is an expression of our Watts Willowbrook Clubhouse, the community, and the youths #GreatFutures!

Grand opening and unveiling at Watts Willowbrook Clubhouse

On the afternoon of Friday, June 7th 2019, Watts Willowbrook Club members excitedly gathered for the unveiling of its new state-of-the-art Center of Innovation, designed to spark youth's interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and shape the leaders of tomorrow. Funded by the Walt Disney Company, the Center of Innovation is equipped with modern technology such as a 3D printer, high-definition SMART board, tablets and laptops to help brainstorm unique ideas and innovate experiences.

Education in STEM is critical to the future success of our youth, as the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. require some education in STEM. As demand increases for STEM professionals, our Clubs strive to inspire curiosity and passion for these subject's. The new STEM Center of Innovation at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles is one of 12 Boys & Girls Club recipients across the U.S. which is part of a $1 million grant from Disney.
